Premature Ejacupination: Social Media Zeitgest
The disturbing trend seen in the last several years and most recently in the Ferguson, Ray Rice, Ukraine-Russia, ISIS, etc. is the collective need to spew our opinions onto social media. We get so excited about a situation (whether the predominant emotion is anger, outrage, sadness, happiness, sympathy, etc.) that we prematurely ejacupinate all over social media. We don’t wait for the truth. We don’t wait for the fact pattern to be fully fleshed out. We don’t take our time to appreciate the developing story.
Look at your feed on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc., it’s a shower of ejacupinions. You can’t avoid it. You have no choice but to participate in social media for fear of being ostracized and left behind. With that, you are forced to be subjected to and violated by everyone’s ejacupinions. Sure, you have options to curate your feeds and limit your exposure, but ultimately, it forces you to defriend/mute/silence people you otherwise consider a colleague/friend/valued family member when they aren’t forcing their ejacupinion down your throat.
You’re violated every single day by others’ ejacupinions but also the expectation that you participate in that behavior. Why aren’t you liking people’s statuses? Why aren’t you writing your own? Why aren’t you angry too? Why don’t you also find this cute? Are you really ok with this?
What’s worse is that these ejacupinions satisfy the propagators enough that they don’t actually do anything about these issues in real life. They don’t ever finish the job. They don’t apply their opinions to the real world. They become real world apathetic because they unloaded their ejacupinion already.
The 24 hour news cycle doesn’t help. It constantly gives us new targets. We collectively bukkake an issue to the point of drowning it and then we run off looking for the next issue to destroy.
I know the term and language I’m using is provocative, but it’s reflective of how disgusting and how violated I feel when I’m subjected to the ignorant opinions of people feeling the need to give an immediate reaction on every single communication forum available in the modern world.
