1. disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.
2. cautiously moderate or purposefully low
I don’t see where hatred and completely against change is stated. I don’t see where you can’t preserve conditions, institutions, etc. by adapting them to the current environment to survive and limit change. I don’t see where it’s means being purposefully regressive. I don’t see where it says you can’t amend a living document like the Constitution. Conservative apparently doesn’t mean anti-moderate.
If I asked you if you were leery of others, distrustful of strangers, weren’t sure of other people’s intentions, would you say yes? If I then told you that your decisions in that environment could affect millions of lives. would you think being cautious is prudent? I’m not anti-radical change. I’m a fan of due diligence (except when I’m doing spontaneous fun stuff that doesn’t change the world).
Every group needs a guy willing to pump the brakes and ask if this is the best course of action. However in this age, we have a group of people who want to stop everything and another group who is eagerly running aimlessly into a direction that might be a giant cliff. I’ll be damned if I have to listen to someone tell me that my uncle and my friends are going to hell because God “made” them gay at birth. I’ll also be damned if I have to listen to someone tell me they can balance the budget by spending more and not raise taxes.
