Why is checking privilege something that Harvard has to add to their freshman orientation? I honestly feel like this is an extension of schools having to parent their students. Are we failing so much as a society that high achieving kids who end up at Harvard never learn how to count their blessings? Did these kids never volunteer to help people less fortunate than them? Did they never really discuss what they should be thankful for during the holidays? Is it really that hard to evaluate yourself and consider what advantages you might have that others do not?
I just hope that this is taught as a tool for compassion and understanding and not utilized as a weapon in tearing down others nor as an excuse for why an individual fails/is rewarded something they haven’t earned.
